A full “AI Playbook” with the detailed review criteria is coming, but the direction is already clear.
Current guidance already bars AI from grading, discipline decisions, and IEP determinations outright. Vendors will need to document their training data, test for disparate outcomes across student demographic groups, and likely submit to third-party or district-led audits.
This is a real shift. Most AI-in-schools guidance to date has been “best practice” language — encouraged, not enforced. NYC is moving toward something with teeth: equity as a non-negotiable evaluation criterion, not a nice-to-have.

Whatever AI tool your nonprofit, school, or business is using — or considering — ask the same three questions NYC is now asking its vendors: What data was this trained on? Does it perform differently across the people it’s meant to serve? Who’s accountable if it doesn’t? That’s not bureaucracy. That’s just good governance, and it costs you twenty minutes, not a task force.

American Express, in partnership with the nonprofits Generation and Scholarship America, has launched new AI training and scholarship programs aimed at helping small businesses build practical AI skills. The centerpiece is the “Smart Futures for Small Business Scholarship” — applications are open now through July 27, 2026.

The Department of Labor and the National Science Foundation signed a formal partnership on the “TechAccess: AI-Ready America” initiative, with NSF making up to $224 million available to establish as many as 56 State/Territory Coordination Hubs. The goal: connect AI knowledge, tools, and training to the workforce and education systems that already exist in your state — American Job Centers, Registered Apprenticeships, and similar programs.

Borrow NYC’s approach at nonprofit scale. Before adopting (or renewing) any AI tool, write down answers to three questions: (1) What is this tool trained on, and does the vendor disclose it? (2) Has it been tested for different outcomes across the populations you serve — by age, language, ability, or background? (3) If it makes a mistake, who at your organization is responsible for catching it? Keep the answers in a shared doc. It takes twenty minutes and gives you a real answer the next time a board member or funder asks how you vet AI tools.
