Nonprofit Software Is Starting to Act on Your Team’s Behalf

The Big Story: Nonprofit Software Is Starting to Act on Your Team’s Behalf

Momentive Software announced MomentiveIQ Agentic Workers, a set of AI agents made for associations and nonprofits. The first two are a Membership Assistant and a Community Assistant. The company says the agents can help with work such as spotting member disengagement, preparing outreach, cleaning data, and flagging community content for review. The preview is scheduled for the ASAE Annual Conference from August 15–18. Momentive announcement

This matters because the next wave of workplace AI is less about asking a chatbot for a draft. It is about connecting a system to a workflow and letting it take several steps. That can reduce repetitive work. It can also move mistakes farther down the line before anyone notices.

Warren’s Take

An agent is not a staff member. It is software with permission to act. Before a nonprofit connects one to member or service data, decide what it may see, what it may suggest, and what a person must approve. A smaller organization may not have a full-time IT team, so the review process must be simple enough to run every week.

Story #2: Google Puts Nonprofit AI Training in the Spotlight

Google says it is offering three nonprofit-focused online courses on fundraising, marketing, and operations, plus one-on-one coaching for Google for Nonprofits organizations. The company also shared a survey in which 86% of respondents said AI could make their personal work more effective, while less than half of their organizations used AI regularly. Google.org update

Warren’s Take

Training is useful only when it reaches the people doing the work. A course cannot fix a process that nobody owns. Pair learning with one small task, a named reviewer, and a written rule for sensitive data. Otherwise, the best-resourced teams keep moving while smaller teams collect another set of links.

Story #3: Small-Business AI Is Moving From Chat to Connected Workflows

Wix announced Symphony, a multi-agent system for small businesses. Its description centers on specialized agents that can work across approved workflows, connect to tools a business already uses, provide updates, and flag actions for approval. Wix announcement

Anthropic has also described Claude for Small Business as a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that can work with tools such as QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365, with approval before an action sends, posts, or pays. Anthropic announcement

Warren’s Take

The alternative to an agent is not “do nothing.” It may be a simpler assistant, a form, or a documented checklist. Connected systems can be helpful, but they also create a larger blast radius when a permission or source is wrong. Start with a workflow where a person can check every result.

Practical Tip of the Week: Draw the Approval Line

Take one recurring task and write five lines: trigger, inputs, steps, human decision, final output. Circle the step where a wrong answer could affect a client, donor, student, patient, or public claim. Keep that step human-led. Test the AI only on the steps before it.
